Is it summer yet!?

As the weather starts to turn to a colder and dimmer environment, it’s got us imagining what a brighter and more inviting home would look like. Where would we like to be? What kind of space could transport us back to warmer days? The best possible answer…The beach. Here are some suggestions on transitioning your home into a light, airy, warm and exciting beachy vibe without it being overwhelmingly cliché.
First and foremost, creating a vacation away from the cold doesn’t mean nautical themes such as shells and anchors. Try staying away from stereotypical oceanic themes when designing a beach themed room, this will allow the room to serve its purpose all year round.  If you want to integrate the ocean try finding a pattern that would be reminiscent of what you might find on the beach. Geometric patterns can be found in nature quite often and may be a great substitution for the typical nautical shell motif, these patterns could be used for throw pillows, artwork, or possibly on an accent wall.
In addition distressed wood can be very sophisticated and a perfect solution to creating a coastal style without it looking like a seaside hotel room. When choosing furniture pieces think of organic materials, this will accentuate the theme, but don’t over do it... make sure to throw some plushy curves in there, perhaps with a sofa.  Stick with neutral bases as if you were borrowing from nature itself, while adding pops of color; for example cool blues, aqua marines, subtle greens, and deep coral reds are reminiscent of the ocean. These colors could be incorporated into pillows, a small piece of furniture, lamps, artwork, or in an area rug.
Another way to lighten up your space is to address your lighting! This is very important in achieving a coastal style. Take your window treatments for example, light weight and neutral linen would be a beautiful way to keep your home private while allowing the most amount of light in. If you plan on remodeling large windows and glass doors are the best way to get the most light out of the day.
All in all, these few suggestions can make the world of difference. Hopefully these tips will transform a dreary wintery space into a fresh, cozy, and airy oasis!
