Rules of a RUG

Sometimes choosing a rug for a specific room can be challenging, whether it is too big, or too small, the main goal is to define your space! Here are some guidelines to go by to help find the perfect rug.
- When arranging furniture the front legs of the furniture pieces should sit over the rug.
- Always make sure when putting down an area rug leave a solid 18” of floor space exposed around the outside of the rug. If your rug is going to be placed underneath the bed make sure it extends 18” from the bed if it’s a King, and 12” if it’s a Full or Twin.
- Try combining rugs so they are parallel to one another within a larger room, this will define two different spaces for multiple seating areas.
- Determine the functionality of your new rug. If you are going to be placing it in the hallways or high traffic areas you will have to choose a durable material for instance flat woven wool or cotton, or natural rugs such as sisal, jute, sea grass, and hemp. Dining rooms and bedrooms are less likely to wear down so using tufted, over dyed, and distressed rugs would be suitable for less to moderate traffic.
- Depending on your furniture if you have a bright or patterned piece try a neutral rug, and if your furniture is more subtle try a patterned or colorful rug.
Area rugs and runners can complete a space especially on hardwood floors. They accentuate specific furniture and accent pieces making your collection cohesive. All in all these aren’t exactly “rules” because creatively we were meant to break them, however, these are some helpful guidelines that may assist you in making the decision easier.
